Self-sampling is an important piece of the cervical cancer screening puzzle.

We believe there is a clear unmet need in cervical cancer prevention that can be addressed through self-sampling.  We have been working since 2003 to find the ideal solution.
We have two alternatives available, the Rovers® Viba-Brush® and the Rovers® Evalyn® Brush device.

1.       The design of the Rovers® Evalyn® Brush (parts, shape, color) has been optimized based on the feedback of women. Important features are:

o   Easy procedure which can be followed with written instructions
o   Fixed length of insertion providing women the comfort that they are taking an adequate sample from the right location and that it is safe to use
o   Brush clicks into position so women know when the brush has reached the correct sample location
o   Rotations can be easily counted by clicks so women are confident that the sample was collected correctly (5 turns)
o   Little or no discomfort after sample taking – unlike lavages which cannot re-capture all the fluid and require pads to prevent spotting
o   Minimized exposure to contact with the sample - The part that has been in the body can be covered by the specially designed cap (we know that this feature is very much appreciated – by women and laboratorians)
o   No liquid handling at home – Eliminating possibility of spilling the collected sample, special handling of controlled substances.
o   Quick and easy handling in the laboratory – the sample can be shipped dry and is easy to manage at the lab where the brush is easily removed and placed into a media for HPV testing.

2. The Rovers® Viba-Brush® may be seen as the “swab-type” (low-cost) sampler.

This brush-head of this device is the same as the brush that is within the Evalyn applicator.  We have studies to show that it is well accepted also and adequate for a well collected sample in lower resource settings.
More information about the Rovers® Viba-Brush® can be found on our website: http://www.roversmedicaldevices.com/index.php?pagina_id=22
In the beginning research was done with the Rovers® Viba-Brush®. The design of the Rovers® Evalyn® Brush was based on end-user usability requirements formulated by the governmental organization in the Netherlands that is responsible for the cervical cancer screening program. Again, the white brush-part – that collects the material - of both products is exactly the same.
We have engaged in the following published studies and focus groups to help us with our design and to generate the data needed for product acceptance:

Some highlights of the studies:

If we would send out self-sampling kits to 100.000 non-screened women in the Netherlands, we would detect between 450 and 500 CIN2+ cases. From other studies we also know that when women that have received a self-sampling kit are actively followed up, the percentage of women that takes the self-sample can go up to approx. 60%. Of course this will lead to an increase in CIN2+ cases detected.
We know that brush-based self-sampling with hrHPV testing is acceptable to women and valid for assessing the risk of CIN2+ in comparison to hrHPV testing on physician-taken scrapes. In addition, there was high concordance of HPV genotyping results.
